PhD Student Dirk Steijger to present two studies at Alzheimer Europe 2025

We are proud to announce that PhD student Dirk Steijger, part of the QoLEAD research consortium, will present two studies at the 35th Alzheimer Europe Conference, taking place from 6 to 8 October 2025 in Bologna, Italy. His work has been selected for poster presentation, showcasing innovative approaches to improving the quality of life for people with dementia through artificial intelligence and natural language processing.

The first poster presentation, titled Effectiveness of Artificial intelligence-aided literature screening approaches: Comparisons with manual screening”, explores the use of ASReview to compare two AI configurations with manual screening. The study assessed their efficiency and accuracy in identifying relevant studies on the impact of AI in dementia care. The results demonstrated that AI tools significantly reduced screening time, with one approach (custom configuration) showing improved effectiveness in identifying relevant studies. These results demonstrate the potential of AI-aided screening, but also highlight the need for thoughtful setup — including algorithm selection, configuration adjustments, and incorporation of prior knowledge — to optimize evidence synthesis in interdisciplinary literature screening.

The second study, “AI and quality of life of people with dementia: A study on AI to and unstructured narrative observational data”, explores the use of natural language processing (NLP) to analyze narrative data from the Maastricht Electronic Daily Life Observation (MEDLO) tool. By applying GPT-4 and other NLP techniques to data from 175 individuals with dementia, the study identified language patterns linked to emotional, social, and environmental aspects of daily life. The findings suggest that NLP can extract meaningful insights from narrative observations, paving the way for real-time feedback on quality of life and enhancing person-centred care in long-term care settings.

We look forward to his presentations at Alzheimer Europe 2025!
